YOUTH GROUPS

Rowde Village Youth Council and Youth Groups
The Youth Council was started in 2008 with the intention of enabling the young people of Rowde the opportunity to have a common voice about what they want and need from the village they live in.

First item on the agenda was to resurrect the Youth Groups. This meant starting from scratch, fundraising for equipment and finding a venue. The group did a sponsored bike ride to Bath and back and raised just short of £1,000. Then thanks to the Primary School, we were also able to hire the school hall at a reduced rate.

Next in our sights was finding a skate park. Devizes Town Council offered the old town skate park for free to anyone who could make use of it - Yes please! The equipment was inspected and it was decided that it was salvageable. The Youth Council then set about applying for a grant to bring it up to scratch and set about making it useable. Thanks to the determination and tenacity of the young people involved, this has been a huge success, so much so that the second phase of work - to replace and add more equipment - will be completed shortly. The second phase of work will be funded from local grants and yet another fundraising bike ride to Bath and back which raised nearly £500.

Not content with the skate park, the group has also moved onto another project to extend the existing BMX track in the village.

Rowde Youth Clubs, RUFI and Young RUFI meet on a Friday evening. The aim is to provide activities and create a regular, safe meeting place. We hope to inspire and enthuse young people living in Rowde and the surrounding villages by giving them the opportunity to express themselves.

RUFI provides for those aged 12 and over and Young RUFI is for those aged 9-11.

Both groups are lively and enthusiastic and have won awards for their creative efforts. Working hand in hand with the Youth Council, the youth groups are continuing to make the village a better environment for young people.
